Why is Vernor's a Michigan thing? ›

Vernors was invented by James Vernor in Detroit, Michigan. The story of how Vernors was invented has a few different variations, however.

The village of Calumet is located in Houghton County in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. This small community houses just under 750 residents, but don't let its size fool you. Calumet has played a massive role in Michigan's history.

The Abraham Lincoln Connection

In 1848 on this exact day, May 29, then Illinois Congressman Abraham Lincoln used the term "Michigander" in a speech aimed at insulting Democratic Michigan Governor Lewis Cass, who was running for president.
