You're probably familiar with traditional face wash formulas: foams, gels, liquids, creams. A newer addition to the category is the cleansing balm, part of the next generation of innovative cleanser formats created to meet needs not addressed by existing versions. "Cleansing balms are cleansing agents that are usually solid at room temperature, but melt on skin at body temperature," explains Good Housekeeping Institute Beauty Lab Senior Chemist Sabina Wizemann.
Cleansing balms "are often buttery and oily in texture and mainly composed of plant oils and fats, such as fatty acids or their derivatives and waxes," says Wizemann, which means they "are effective in removing dirt, oil and cosmetics — even sunscreen and heavy makeup including waterproof mascara — when massaged into skin." And because they both cleanse and remove makeup, cleansing balms save money and time in your routine. "Cleansing balms are formulated with oils and hydrating ingredients, so they work without stripping away the skin’s natural oils and are more moisturizing than traditional cleansers," adds Ramya Garlapati, M.D., a dermatologist in Los Angeles, California.
The GH Beauty Lab is constantly testing face cleanser and makeup remover formulas, including cleansing balms. They are evaluated in the Lab for cleansing and makeup removal efficacy using scientific protocols and on consumer testers to gauge ease of use, product attributes like texture and scent, and look and feel of skin after use. In the GH Beauty Lab's most recent face cleanser and makeup remover tests, a total of 16,712 data points were tallied to find the top formulas on the market.

Cleansing balms are ideal for all skin types: They're "very good for dry, sensitive and mature skin types, but even oily skin types can use cleansing balms, since oil attracts oil, so the oil in the cleansing balm will help break down excess sebum," says Carmen Castilla, M.D., a dermatologist and Clinical Instructor at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City. So whether you're oily, dry, sensitive or any combo therein, read all about the best cleansing balms you can buy for all skin types, plus expert tips on how to shop for and use them.

The fragrance-free face wash earned the top score in Lab testing for needing the fewest swipes to completely remove makeup. Plus, 100% of testers agreed that it rinsed off easily and didn’t irritate or bring on breakouts. “Dissolved all my sunscreen and makeup almost instantly,” and, “skin felt fresh, clean and so soft,” two testers raved, though it may leave some residue behind on eyes after rinsing. How we test cleansing balms
The GH Beauty Lab evaluates face cleansers and makeup removers, including cleansing balms, by first scanning the market for launches across price points from mass to prestige. They are then label-masked to eliminate brand bias. In the Lab, experts grade how well they remove makeup from skin in one swipe and conduct a test to measure the number of swipes needed for complete removal of the makeup.
Face washes and makeup removers are also distributed to hundreds of consumer testers of various skin types, who evaluate them on factors including ease of application, texture, scent, irritation, cleansing and makeup removing ability, and look and feel of skin after use.
In the GH Beauty Lab's most recent face cleansers test, 4,512 data points were tallied; in the most recent makeup removers test, 12,200 data points were collated to find the winners.
How do cleansing balms work to remove makeup from skin?
"The components of cleansing balms work on the chemical principle that 'like dissolves like', where compounds with similar characteristics will dissolve each other," says Wizemann. The oils in a cleansing balm break down and effectively whisk away dirt, oil and makeup. Wizemann adds, "They may also contain a small amount of surfactant, which helps loosen the substances to be cleansed off of skin and helps other ingredients dissolve."

Are cleansing balms good for your skin?
Yes, they can be, dermatologist experts agree. "Cleansing balms tend to be less irritating and less likely to break down your skin barrier, which leads to dry, irritated skin," Dr. Castilla says. "They can also leave a hydrating layer behind on skin."
Is cleansing balm good for all skin types?
In general, "cleansing balms can be used on any skin type," Dr. Castilla says. That said, "those with sensitive or eczema-prone skin should avoid cleansing balms with essential oils or heavy fragrances," she advises. "These ingredients can be very irritating to an already compromised skin barrier."
Also be aware that "cleansing balms that tout anti-aging skincare ingredients such as peptides or retinol are likely not worth extra cost as these product are meant to be rinsed off and the ingredients will not remain on skin for enough time to provide adequate benefits," Wizemann explains.

How do I use a cleansing balm?
Cleansing balms can be applied daily in the morning and/or evening. Here's how Dr. Castilla advises using them:
- Take a small amount of cleansing balm and apply it to dry skin
- Work the balm in gentle circles for about 30 seconds
- Rinse with lukewarm water or gently remove the balm with a wet washcloth
"Oily skin types may need to follow a cleansing balm with a typical face cleanser," Dr. Castilla says, so while you don't have to wash your face again after applying a cleansing balm, "you can also use it as the first step to double cleanse as part of your nighttime skincare routine and follow it with a gentle traditional cleanser," Dr. Garlapati explains.
